An American Hero - One Hometown Doctor Treats 3,000 Covid-19 Patients: How It All Started

Updated: Apr 18, 2021

I want to share a brief story as told by Dr. James Buckmaster, an outpatient physician who has treated over 3,000 Covid-19 patients giving them early treatment out of his small primary care clinic that he and his wife run in Henderson, KY. He speaks about the first two patients he ever treated at the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020.

"My first patient did very well. She turned from being very, very sick and within 48 hours, she was back and doing great. So I was so impressed at that and thought, 'Oh my goodness!' this is really gonna work. This is great!

So there was a big Catholic funeral in town and a bunch of patients came after that. It was just huge. The 87-year-old husband of the person who had passed away came in with his [Covid-19 positive] test, fever of 103, aching all over and his grandson was also sick.

I went ahead and treated both of them. And I remember, talking to his daughter, and I said, 'You call me tomorrow. Let me know how he does.'

And this was patient number two for me. So I was just really nervous. So the next day came, they didn't call. And I thought well, I'll wait one more day.

So after one more day, finally I couldn't take it anymore. So I called her up and asked, 'Why didn't you call me?" And she said, "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot." I then asked, "Where's your dad?" And she said, "He is out mowing the yard!" I apologized, "Oh, sorry. Well, I'll put that down in the win crowd."

--Dr. James Buckmaster in Henderson, KY has treated over 3,000 Covid-19 patients and prescribes to both Kentucky and Tennessee and accepts telemedicine appointments.

In a morally sane world, everyone would be banging on his door to find out what he's doing.

I wish everyone would watch the Shirley Temple movie "Heidi" explains so much about the modern world - when Heidi's aunt kidnaps her and drops her off to be a companion to the daughter of a rich invalid girl, she says to the girl's caretaker - "You think I don't know your game - a rich widower with a sick child - you don't want Clara to be well" (since Frau Rottenmeir's income depends on her being sick).
